The Practice and A Bit About Me

Sri Devi is the name given to me at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram where I received my first certification in 2004.  On the street my name is Kathleen.  I am a senior Yoga Teacher and Internationally Certified Life & Executive Coach.  For more information on my training click here. 

In the West we often think of yoga as an exercise program for our bodies, which is half the story. The word Yoga is derived means to bind or to yoke, to direct one’s attention.  The purpose of stretching and the practicing the poses (asanas) is to create a strong body that will allow discipline of the mind

The practice starts with a very gentle yoga asana followed by techniques from traditional yoga like:
Mindfulness, Meditation, Prana Breathing and also integrates Contemporary Neuroscience

This integrated process helps students develop a greater sense of well being and happiness.  With daily practice new neural pathways of the brain actually change, giving greater emotional self- regulation and the ability to focus and be present.

In the book “Light on Yoga” by B.K.S. Iyengar, it speaks of the mind as; “… restless and hard to control, but it can be trained by constant practice (abhyasas).”

When the senses are stilled, when the mind is at rest, when the intellect wavers not – then say the wise, is reached the highest stage.  This steady control of the senses and mind has been defined as Yoga…
